Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society.
SmokeFree Dutchess is one of 35 Community Partnerships across New York State funded through a grant from the New York State Tobacco Control Program. We are dedicated to reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other tobacco-related diseases by lowering the prevalence of tobacco use through community programs in prevention education, cessation, and advocacy.
SmokeFree Dutchess is important to our community because tobacco use is still the number one cause of preventable death, claiming 25,500 New Yorkers lives a year. Our goals are to inform community leaders and the public, about the dangers and social costs of tobacco and change the historic acceptability of tobacco. SmokeFree Dutchess engages local stakeholders to address tobacco industry advertising and sponsorship, and encourages the adoption of effective tobacco-free policies in indoor and outdoor environments in order to eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke and the negative influence tobacco use has on children.
Thanks in part to the work of the New York State Tobacco Control Program, both adult and youth cigarette smoking in New York State have significantly decreased below the national rates. That progress means both lives and money are being saved.
